Chart of common acne types and when to see a skin expert in London

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions, and it does not only affect teenagers. Many adults in their twenties, thirties and beyond deal with breakouts. Mild spots often improve with a good routine, but some acne needs professional help.

Know the types of spots

  • Blackheads and whiteheads: blocked pores, often on the nose, chin and forehead.
  • Papules and pustules: red, inflamed spots, sometimes with a white centre.
  • Nodules and cysts: deeper, larger, often painful lumps under the skin. These are the most likely to leave scars.

What you can try at home

For mild acne, products containing ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or azelaic acid, available from pharmacies, can help. Use a gentle cleanser, an oil-free moisturiser and daily SPF, and avoid picking or squeezing. Give any new routine around eight to twelve weeks, as acne treatments take time to work.

Signs it is time to see an expert

  • Your spots are painful, deep or cystic.
  • Over-the-counter products have not helped after two to three months.
  • Your acne is leaving dark marks or scars.
  • Breakouts appear suddenly as an adult, or come with other changes such as irregular periods or excess hair growth.
  • Your skin is affecting your mood or confidence.

Who to see

Your GP is a good first step. They can prescribe stronger treatments and refer you to a dermatologist when needed. Some prescription treatments are only available through a doctor.

A skin clinic or aesthetic practitioner can support you alongside medical treatment with options such as professional peels, clarifying facials, LED therapy and, later on, treatments for acne scarring. A good practitioner will ask about any medication you take and will refer you to a doctor if your acne needs medical treatment.

Do not wait for scarring

Treating acne early is the best way to reduce the risk of long-term marks. If you are unsure, it is always worth getting your skin assessed.
