Glow from within: how sleep, food and stress show up on your skin

Sleep, food and your skin: the everyday habits that help your complexion look its best.

Great skincare products help, but your skin also reflects how you sleep, eat and live. The good news is that small, consistent habits can make a visible difference over time.

Sleep: your skin's repair time

During sleep the body carries out much of its repair work. Regular short nights can leave skin looking dull and puffy and make dark circles more noticeable. Aim for a consistent bedtime, keep screens out of the last half hour, and change pillowcases regularly, especially if you are prone to breakouts.

Food: colour on your plate

There is no single superfood for skin, but a balanced diet supports skin health. Helpful choices include:

  • Colourful fruit and vegetables such as berries, peppers, leafy greens and citrus, which provide vitamin C and antioxidants.
  • Healthy fats from oily fish, avocado, nuts and seeds.
  • Enough protein, which provides the building blocks your skin uses every day.

Some people notice that very sugary or highly processed foods coincide with breakouts. If you suspect a link, keep a simple food and skin diary for a few weeks before making big changes, and speak to your GP or a registered dietitian before cutting out whole food groups.

Hydration

Drinking enough water supports your overall health, but it will not fix dry skin on its own. Pair it with a moisturiser that suits your skin type, and consider a humidifier if central heating leaves your skin tight in winter.

Stress

Many people find their skin flares during stressful periods. Movement, time outdoors, regular breaks and enough sleep all help. Even ten minutes of walking or stretching a day counts.

Sun protection, every day

Daily SPF is one of the most effective habits for keeping skin looking healthy for longer, even in the UK and even on cloudy days.

When to see someone

If changes in your skin come with other symptoms, such as unusual tiredness, hair loss or rapid weight change, speak to your GP. For skin goals, a qualified skin expert can help you build a plan around your lifestyle.
